[Maths Class Notes] on Difference Between Place Value and Face Value Pdf for Exam

One must understand the difference between Place value and Face value. There are certain key differences between them based on the Placement of digits for a given number and related terminologies.

The following table lists the key differences between Place value and Face value:

Place value

Face value

A Place value describes the position or Place of a digit in a given number.

The Face value of a digit describes the value of the digit itself.

Each digit of the number has a value depending on its Place.

It does not depend on the position or Place of the digit in a number.

Place value of digit = (Face value) × (numerical value of Place)

Face value of digit = numerical value of the digit itself.

The Place value of digit 0 in a given number is always 0.

The Place value of digit 0 is 0.

Example: The Place value of digit 8 in 5,831 = 8 × 100 = 800.

Example: The Face value of digit 8 in 5,831 = 8

Solved Example:

Q.1. Find the Face value and Place value of each digit of 80,156.

Solution:

The Face value of 6 in 80,156 = 6.

The Place value of 6 in 80,156 = 6 × 1 = 6.

The Face value of 5 in 80,156 = 5.

The Place value of 5 in 80,156 = 5 × 10 = 50.

The Face value of 1 in 80,156 = 1.

The Place value of 1 in 80,156 = 1 × 100 = 100.

The Face value of 0 in 80,156 = 0.

The Place value of 0 in 80,156 = 0 × 1,000 = 0.

The Face value of 8 in 80,156 = 8.

The Place value of 8 in 80,156 = 8 × 10,000 = 80,000.

Q.2. Find the product of Place value of 3 in 1,431 and Place value of 5 in 5,001.

Solution:

The Place value of 3 in 1,431 = 3 × 10 = 30.

And, the Place value of 5 in 5,001 = 5 × 1,000 = 5,000.

Therefore, their product = 30 × 5000 = 1,50,000.
