[Maths Class Notes] on Decimeter Pdf for Exam

Decimeter/Decimetre (the unit of measurement in the metric system is equal to one-tenth of a meter (the International System of Base Units of length), 10 centimetres, or 3,937 inches).

The popular non-SI metric volume unit, the litre, is defined as a single cubic decimeter.

The decimeter is the length of the metric scale. The Decimeter Symbol is Dm In Maths. The word “Deci” means one-tenth, and hence 1 decimeter/1 Decimetre(1dm) means one-tenth of a meter. Since the meter is 100 cm, one-tenth of 100 cm is 10 cm. One decimeter measures 10 centimetres.

Metric System

The metric system is a measuring system that succeeded in the decimalized system built on the meter adopted in France in the 1790s. The historic implementation of these systems resulted in the definition of the International System of Units under the supervision of the International Standards Body. The International System of Units (SI, abbreviated from the French International System (d’unités)) is a modern metric system. It is the only way of calculating official status in nearly every country in the world. It consists of a coherent system of units of measurement beginning with seven basic units, which are the second (the unit of time with the symbol s), meter (length, m), kilogram (mass, kg), ampere (electric current, A), kelvin (thermodynamic temperature, K), mole (substance quantity, mole) and candela (luminous intensity, cd).

What are the Units of Measurement?

The unit of measurement shall be a certain quantity, specified and accepted by convention by statute, which shall be used as a norm for the measurement of the same quantity. Any other quantity of this kind may be expressed as a multiple of the unit of measurement. A length, for example, is a physical number. A meter is a unit of length that represents a set length. When we say 10 metres (or 10 m), we simply mean 10 times the fixed length of the meter. Measurement is the method of deciding how high or small a physical quantity is relative to the basic reference quantity of the same nature.

What are the Units of Length?

Length is a function of distance. In the International System of Quantities, the length is a measure with a dimension of distance. In most measuring schemes, a base unit for length is selected from which all other units are obtained. In the International System of Units (SI) system, the length of the base unit is the meter. In the International System of Units (SI), the fundamental unit of length is the meter (symbol, m) and is now defined in terms of the speed of light (about 300 million meters per second). Millimetre (mm), centimetre (cm), and kilometre (km), derived from the meter, are also widely used measurements. In U.S. customary units, the English or Imperial unit system, the widely used units of length are the inch (in), the foot (ft), the yard (yd), and the mile (mi). The measurement of length used for navigation is the nautical mile (nmi).

Conversion of Units

The conversion of units is a conversion of various units of measurement for the same number, generally utilizing multiplicative conversion factors. The conversion factor shall be used to adjust the units of the measured quantity without altering its value. The unit bracket conversion method consists of a fraction of which the denominator is equal to the numerator, but it is in separate units. Due to the identity property of the multiplication, the value of the number will not change as long as it is multiplied by one. Meter, Decimeter And Centimeter are units of length. Dm Unit can be expressed using centimetres and metre. Dm Means In Maths decimeter which is a smaller unit of length than a metre.

Conversion of Decimeter to Other Units

  • 1 decimeter( 1dm) = 100 milimetre

  • 1 decimeter( 1dm) = 10 centimetre

  • 1 decimeter( 1dm) = 0.1 metre

  • 1 decimeter( 1dm) = 0.01 decametre

  • 1 decimeter( 1dm) = 0.001 hectometre

  • 1 decimeter( 1dm) = 0.0001 kilometre

Solved Examples

1. Convert 2550 dm to centimetres.

Ans:

We know that, 1 decimeter( 1dm) = 10 centimetre, therefore,

2550 decimetre = centimetres

2550 decimetre = 25500 centimetres

2. How many decimetres are 25 metres in length?

Ans:

We know that, 1 decimeter( 1dm) = 0.1 metre

25 decimetre = 25 x 0.1 metre

25 decimetre = 2.5 metre
