[Maths Class Notes] on Cooking Measurements Pdf for Exam

In recipes, the quantity of ingredients are generally defined by mass (commonly known as weight), by volume, or by count.

Today, metric measurements by weight are preferred almost in different parts of the World, though the preference for volume measurement is extensive among home cooks in the United States and North America. Different ingredients are measured differently.

For Example, liquid ingredients are measured by volume whereas solid ingredients such as sugar, and flour are measured by weight worldwide, and volume in North America. Small quantities such as salt and species are generally measured by Volume, whereas meats are generally defined by weight or count Worldwide.‘ a 4 kg of chicken”, “ 5 lamb chops”. Eggs are usually measured in counts whereas vegetables are measured by weight, or occasionally by count.

Volume

In recipes, the quantities of ingredients are either measured by weight or volume. Water, milk, flour, sugar can be measured using:

  • Teaspoon

  • Tablespoon

  • Fluid Ounces

  • Cups

  • Pints

  • Liters

Some are metric, while others are US Standard, but it doesn’t pay much heed when we have measuring spoons or measuring cups.

Here, we will understand more about measuring spoons or measuring cups in brief.

What is Tsp Measurement?

A teaspoon, also known as tsp is an item of cutlery. It is a tool used for measuring volume or a small spoon that can be used to stir a cup or coffee. The size of the spoon ranges from about 2.5 ml to 7.3 ml. A teaspoonful is defined as 5 ml when used for cooking purposes, or most importantly for dosing purposes.

In the USA, there are 16 teaspoons in ⅓ cups and 6 teaspoons in 1 fluid ounce. The metric teaspoon as a unit of culinary measures is 5 ml or 5 cm³, ¼ Australian metric spoon, or ⅓ UK/ Canadian metric spoon.

What is the Measurement of 1 Teaspoon?

The measurement of 1 teaspoon is exactly equal to 5 ml or ⅓ tablespoon.

What is TBS Measurement?

A TBS or tablespoon is a large spoon used as a cooking measure by volume. It is occasionally referred to as tablespoonful or abbreviated as T or Tbsp. The TSB measurements vary by region: a United States tablespoon is approximately 14.8 ml (0.50 US fl oz), Canadian or United Kingdom tablespoon is exactly 15 ml (0.51 US fl oz), and an Australian tablespoon is (0.68 US fl oz) or 20 ml.

Traditional TBS Measurement Definition

The traditional US definition of tablespoon or tbsp as a unit of volume is defined as:

I US tablespoon = 3 teaspoon

                          = 4 fluid drams

                          = ½ US fluid ounce

                          ≈ 14.8 ml

A metric spoon is equal to 15 ml or 0.52 US fl oz.

The Australian definition of a tablespoon as a unit of volume is defined as:

1 Australian tablespoon = 4 teaspoon

                                       = 2 dessertspoon

                                        = 20 ml

                                        = ⅔ US fl oz.

Measuring Spoon and Cup in ML

A measuring spoon is a spoon used to measure ingredients, with liquid or dry in different recipes. Measuring spoons are made up of steel, plastic, metal, and other materials. They are available in different sizes such as teaspoon, and tablespoon.

Metric measuring spoons are available in different sets such as four to six sets, generally with decilitre (100 ml), teaspoon (5 ml), tablespoon (15 ml), and milliliter measures.

A measuring cup, also known as a measuring jug is used to measure the volume of liquid or bulk solid such as sugar and flour especially for volumes about (2 fl oz) or 50 ml upwards. Measuring cups may be made up of plastic, metals, or glass.

Measuring cups generally have a capacity from 250 ml ( approximately 1 cup) or 1000 ml (approximately 4 cups), though larger sizes of cups are also available for commercial use.

Solved Example

1. Convert 5 teaspoons to tablespoons.

Solution:

As we know, 1 tablespoon equals 3 teaspoon

Accordingly,

We can use the formula, tablespoon (tbs) = teaspoon (tsp) 3 to convert a teaspoon to a tablespoon.

Therefore,

5 Tsp = 5 ÷ 3 = 1.666667 tbsp.

2. Convert ½ tablespoon to teaspoons.

Solution:

As we know, 1 tablespoon equals 0.33333 teaspoon.

Accordingly,

We can use the formula, teaspoon (tbs) = tablespoon (tsp) 3 to convert a tablespoon to teaspoon.

Therefore,

½ Tsp = ½ 3 = 1.5 tbsp.
